Why do I need to use underlayment. What can't I use old carpet remnants?

Underlayment serves a number of purposes in the construction of a liner pond. It provides a barrier of protection from tree roots, rocks, burrowing animals. It also allows for the exchange of gas. Using carpet might seem like a good idea, but most carpet as it begins to decompose, emits bad smells and gases. Underlayment is inexpensive, easy to install into the pond.
