The first step in troubleshooting any electrical product is verifying that the power supply is installed correctly and operating properly. Even if the product appears to be the issue, many problems can be traced back to the electrical setup.
Please review the following steps and note your findings:
- Determine how the product is receiving power
- Is the unit plugged directly into an outlet, or is it connected using an extension cord?
- If using an extension cord several issues can occur:
- Connections are often not watertight, which can lead to moisture intrusion and shorting
- The cord can become loose or disconnected over time
- An undersized (incorrect gauge) extension cord can cause voltage drop and overheating, potentially damaging the product
- Extension cords should only be used as a temporary solution until an outdoor-rated GFCI outlet is installed by a licensed electrician.
- Use of an extension cord may void the product warranty
- If using an extension cord several issues can occur:
- Is the unit plugged directly into an outlet, or is it connected using an extension cord?
- If plugged directly into an outlet:
- Confirm the outlet is a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet
- Verify the outlet is properly rated for the total electrical load of all connected devices
- Ensure the outlet has an approved weatherproof (in-use) cover to protect against moisture
- Check circuit configuration
- Determine whether the outlet is on a dedicated circuit for the pond or water feature system
- Shared circuits can lead to inconsistent power supply or nuisance tripping
- Test the outlet
- Plug in a known working device (such as a lamp or small tool) to confirm the outlet is supplying power
- If available, use a receptacle tester to verify proper wiring and GFCI function
If any issues are identified during these steps, they should be corrected before continuing with any product-specific troubleshooting.
