To prevent fish from getting stuck in a skimmer, here are a few strategies you can use:
Adjust the Skimmer Door
You can remove or modify the skimmer door, which will allow fish to freely enter and exit the skimmer box. However, be aware that doing this can significantly reduce the skimming efficiency, as the water won’t be pulled in as effectively.
Place a Large Rock in Front of the Skimmer
Positioning a large rock in front of the skimmer box can help filter the water without trapping the fish. This allows the skimmer to still pull water from the surface while creating an escape route for the fish.
Routine Maintenance
Regularly check the skimmer and empty it to avoid any fish getting trapped or stuck. The more frequently you check, the safer it is for any that accidentally make their way in.
Pump Size
Ensure the pump is sized appropriately for the skimmer. When approaching the maximum flow rate of a skimmer, the current leading into the skimmer will increase and can be more difficult for fish to swim away from.
Fish Health
Often times fish will freely swim near a skimmer system without issues. Once a fish has been found in the skimmer, it is common to find the fish had a preemptive health issue.
Although these methods can be used it is important to note while making these adjustments to not completely restrict the skimming process as this could cause issues with the overall health of the ecosystem.
