How often you should feed your pond fish depends on the water temperature, fish activity, and appetite. During warmer months, koi, goldfish, and other pond fish can be fed up to three times per day. As water temperatures cool, their metabolism slows and they require less food.
Feeding guidelines by water temperature
- Below 50°F (10°C): Stop feeding your fish. Their metabolism slows significantly, making it difficult for them to properly digest food.
- 50–60°F (10–16°C): Feed small amounts once daily using Aquascape Premium Cold Water Fish Food Pellets, which are formulated for easier digestion in cooler water.
- Above 60°F (16°C): Switch to regular fish food, such as Aquascape Premium Staple Fish Food Pellets. Feed up to three times daily, depending on your fish's appetite and activity.
In the spring, wait until the pond water consistently reaches at least 50°F (10°C) before resuming feeding.
How much food should I feed my fish?
Only provide as much food as your fish can completely consume within three minutes.
Sprinkle the food in the same area of your pond during each feeding. Your fish will learn where to gather, making it easier to observe their appetite and prevent uneaten food from accumulating.
If your fish are not actively eating or food remains after three minutes, reduce the amount at the next feeding.
Why is overfeeding a problem?
Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes pond owners make. Excess food and fish waste can contribute to poor water quality and place additional strain on your pond's biological filtration system.
Always observe your fish's feeding behavior and adjust the amount of food accordingly. Avoid heavy feeding when pond water is cloudy or oxygen levels are low.
Remember: Feed according to water temperature and appetite rather than a fixed schedule. Feeding smaller portions helps keep your fish healthy and your pond water clean.
