To winterize a Fountainscape, the process depends on the setup, but generally follows these steps:
Pump Removal
Most Fountainscapes don’t have a check valve, so you can usually just unplug the pump and leave it in the vault or AquaBasin, ensuring it stays submerged in water. If it’s an adjustable flow pump, remove the receiver from the outlet and store it somewhere protected from the elements.
Spillway Bowls
If the Fountainscape includes a spillway bowl or feature that holds water, turn off the pump and allow the water to drain back. If there’s a T-fitting inside, remove it to ensure the bowl drains fully. Cover the bowl with a spillway bowl cover or tarp to prevent rain and melting snow from collecting and freezing inside, which could cause cracking.
Urns, Spheres, and Custom Slate Walls
For these features, turn off the pump to allow water to drain back through the pipes. If there’s a check valve, disconnect it so water can fully drain. Cover the top section of the urns, spheres, or walls where water might pool and freeze. We offer fountain covers for this purpose, though tarping the entire feature isn’t necessary—just the recessed areas where water could accumulate. By covering only the areas prone to pooling, you’ll protect the Fountainscape from freeze damage over the winter.
