Your AquascapePRO Pump is designed to operate reliably for many seasons, but proper winter handling is critical to protect internal components and ensure easy startup in the spring.
If you plan to shut down your pond or water feature during the winter, follow these recommended steps.
What to do with your AquascapePRO Pump in winter
If your system is being shut down:
- Remove the pump from the skimmer, vault, or filter system
- Clean off any debris, scale, or buildup before storage
- Place the pump in a bucket or container filled with water
- Store the pump in a frost-free location (above 32°F / 0°C)
Why store the pump in water?
- Keeping the pump submerged helps:
- Prevent seals from drying out
- Maintain lubrication inside the pump
- Extend the overall life of the unit
Spring startup and “kick-starting” the pump
After sitting unused over the winter, it’s normal for a pump to need assistance when restarting.
Before reinstalling:
- Plug the pump into a power outlet and observe operation
- Visually check if the impeller is spinning
If the pump does NOT start on its own:
- Unplug the pump
- Use a screwdriver or similar tool to gently rotate the impeller
- Once the impeller begins spinning:
- Internal lubrication is reintroduced
- The pump should resume normal operation
After confirming proper operation:
- Reinstall the pump back into the skimmer or basin
- Restore normal system operation
Additional winter considerations
- Always ensure pumps and plumbing are protected from freezing conditions
- Water left inside plumbing or components can freeze and cause cracking or damage
- Proper winterization is essential to avoid damage
