Pond underlayment provides a protective cushion between the soil and EPDM pond liner, helping prevent punctures and damage from rocks, roots, and uneven ground.
Underlayment also allows gases naturally present in the soil to escape, helping prevent gas buildup beneath the liner.
Can I use old carpet instead of pond underlayment?
Aquascape does not recommend using old carpet as a substitute for pond underlayment for two reasons:
- Potential punctures: Old carpeting may contain hidden staples, carpet tacks, or other sharp objects that could puncture the pond liner.
- Deterioration: Carpet can break down over time, potentially producing unpleasant odors and gases as it decomposes.
For best results, use underlayment specifically designed for pond installations.
