During a complete pond cleanout, fish should be temporarily moved to a clean, aerated holding container filled with suitable pond water. This helps protect them from stress, injury, and poor water conditions during cleaning.
What Supplies Do I Need?
- Clean, fish-safe holding container or tank
- Fish net
- Pond aerator and air stones
- Secure mesh cover or netting
- Pond thermometer
- Aquascape Pond Detoxifier, if replacement water requires treatment
How Do I Safely Remove and Hold the Fish?
- Prepare the holding container. Place it in a shaded location and fill it with suitable existing pond water before the water becomes disturbed.
- Provide aeration. Install an aerator to maintain oxygen levels in the holding container.
- Lower the pond water level. Turn off the pond pump and begin draining the pond.
- Gently capture the fish. Once the water is low enough, use a fish net to guide the fish into a suitable container for transfer. Avoid excessive handling.
- Secure the holding container. Cover it with mesh or netting to prevent fish from jumping out.
While the fish are being held, maintain continuous aeration, avoid overcrowding, and protect the container from direct sunlight. Monitor water temperature and fish behavior. For extended holding periods, also monitor ammonia and water quality.
When Can I Return the Fish to the Pond?
Return the fish only after:
- The pond has been refilled and any chlorine or chloramine has been neutralized.
- The pump and filtration system are operating properly.
- The water temperature and chemistry are suitable for the fish.
- The fish have been gradually acclimated to the pond's water conditions.
Important: Sudden changes in water temperature, pH, or water quality can stress or injure fish. Never return fish directly to untreated municipal water.
