Aquascape Pond Plant Potting Media is recommended for waterlilies, lotus, and other aquatic plants grown in planting containers.
Benefits include:
- All-natural, non-toxic planting media.
- Fine-grained material that supports healthy root growth.
- Free of peat moss and compost.
- Safe for ponds containing koi and other fish.
Heavy, mineral-based topsoil may also be suitable for aquatic plants when it is free of fertilizers, pesticides, and organic additives.
What soil should I avoid?
Avoid using conventional garden potting mixes containing:
- Peat moss or compost: These materials can float, decompose, and contribute organic debris to the pond.
- Perlite or vermiculite: Lightweight materials may float out of submerged planting containers.
- Added fertilizers: Fertilizers not intended for aquatic use can release excess nutrients into pond water.
Do aquatic plants need to be planted in soil?
Not all aquatic plants require soil.
- Waterlilies and lotus: Typically grow best in aquatic planting containers filled with appropriate pond plant potting media.
- Marginal plants: Many can grow directly in the gravel along pond edges or in aquatic planting containers.
- Floating plants: Water lettuce and water hyacinth do not require soil because their roots absorb nutrients directly from the pond water.
Tip: When planting aquatic plants in containers, cover the potting media with a layer of rinsed gravel to help prevent soil from escaping into the pond.
