Aquascape lighting transformers provide low-voltage power to pond, fountain, and landscape lights. If your lights are not turning on, flickering, or turning on and off unexpectedly, follow these troubleshooting steps to identify the problem.
Aquascape lighting transformers
The following Aquascape transformers are covered in this guide:
Low Voltage Quick-Connect Transformers
- 6 W Transformer: Item #98375
- 20 W Transformer: Item #98485
- 60 W Transformer: Item #98486
Low Voltage Transformers with Photocell
- 60 W Transformer with Photocell: Item #99070
- 150 W Transformer with Photocell: Item #01002
If the lights do not turn on
- Check the power source: Confirm the transformer is plugged into a working ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet.
- Check the GFCI outlet: If the outlet has tripped, reset it. If it continues to trip, disconnect the transformer and have the electrical fault inspected.
- Check the connections: Unplug the transformer and inspect the lighting connections. Make sure all quick-connect fittings are fully inserted and their weatherproof collars are securely tightened.
- Test another light: Connect a known working, compatible Aquascape light to determine whether the problem is with the light fixture or transformer.
- Check the transformer settings: If your transformer includes a photocell or timer, verify that its operating settings are correct.
If the lights do not turn on during the day
The Aquascape 60 W and 150 W transformers with photocells automatically turn on at dusk.
To test the photocell:
- Set the transformer to AUTO.
- Completely cover the photocell to simulate darkness.
- Wait 30–60 seconds.
- Check whether the connected lights turn on.
The 150 W photocell transformer also includes an ON setting for manually turning on the lights.
Photocell transformer settings include:
- AUTO: Lights turn on at dusk and off at dawn.
- 4H: Lights turn on at dusk and turn off after 4 hours.
- 6H: Lights turn on at dusk and turn off after 6 hours.
- 8H: Lights turn on at dusk and turn off after 8 hours.
If the lights repeatedly turn on and off
Lights connected to an Aquascape quick-connect transformer may repeatedly cycle on and off because of an electrical overload or short circuit.
- Unplug the transformer.
- Inspect lighting cables and connections for visible damage.
- Check for loose connections or damaged wiring.
- Verify that the connected lighting load does not exceed the transformer's rated capacity.
- Correct the identified problem before reconnecting power.
For Aquascape 60 W and 150 W photocell transformers, Aquascape recommends operating at no more than 80% of the transformer's rated capacity to maximize its lifespan.
- 60 W photocell transformer: Recommended lighting load of 48 W or less.
- 150 W photocell transformer: Recommended lighting load of 120 W or less.
If the lights appear dim or operate inconsistently
- Check cable length: Excessively long cable runs can cause voltage loss and reduced lighting performance.
- Inspect connections: Disconnect power and check for loose, damaged, or corroded connectors.
- Check the lighting load: Confirm the combined wattage of the connected lights is appropriate for the transformer.
- Test an individual light: Use a known working, compatible Aquascape light to help identify a possible fixture or connection problem.
Positioning the transformer closer to the lighting fixtures can help reduce voltage loss caused by long cable runs.
If the transformer still does not work
If the outlet works, connections are secure, settings are correct, and a known working light will not illuminate, the transformer may be defective.
Do not open, modify, or attempt to repair the transformer.
If additional assistance is needed, please submit a request through the Aquascape Customer Care contact form.
Important safety information:
- Always disconnect power before inspecting or adjusting electrical connections.
- Connect transformers to a properly installed GFCI-protected outlet.
- Never submerge a transformer in water.
- Do not use extension cords with the 60 W or 150 W photocell transformers.
- Do not connect multiple photocell transformers together or use a dimmer with them.
- If a circuit breaker repeatedly trips, disconnect power and have the electrical fault corrected before operating the lighting system again.
