Improving Wi-Fi Strength for Aquascape Smart Control Products
1. Understanding RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator)
- Definition: RSSI measures the strength of the wireless signal received by a device.
- Where to Find It:
- The Aquascape Smart Control App displays signal strength in dBm under "Signal Strength" on the device tile.
- Measurement:
- RSSI is a scale from 0 to -99, with lower numbers (e.g., -20) indicating stronger signals and higher numbers (e.g., -80) indicating weaker signals.
- Influenced by various factors, including physical obstructions and electronic interference.
2. Symptoms of Poor Wi-Fi Signal Strength
- Smart control products frequently disconnect and reconnect.
- Devices are slow or unresponsive to app commands.
- Notifications from the app are delayed.
3. Common Causes of Weak Wi-Fi Signal
- Competing Wi-Fi Networks:
- Crowded network environments, especially in densely populated areas.
- Electronic Device Interference:
- Devices like cell phones, TVs, microwaves, video game consoles, etc., can disrupt signals.
- Physical Obstructions:
- Walls, floors, furniture, or bookcases can block or weaken Wi-Fi signals.
4. Tips to Improve Wi-Fi Strength
- Optimize Router Settings:
- Enable automatic channel switching to reduce network congestion. Refer to your router's documentation for instructions.
- Improve Router Placement:
- Move the router closer to the device.
- Elevate the router by 1–2 feet and place it in an open, unobstructed area.
- Reduce Electronic Interference:
- Unplug or relocate nearby electronics.
- Ensure devices like TVs, game consoles, or PCs are a few feet away from the router or device.
- Adjust Router Antennas:
- Point antennas in different directions to optimize signal distribution.
- Extend Wi-Fi Coverage:
- Install a Wi-Fi range extender to increase coverage in weak signal areas.
- Use a "Powerline Extender," which transmits data over electrical cables using devices plugged into outlets.
- Upgrade Your Hardware:
- Consider a new router, especially if your current one is several years old.
- Switch to Wired Connections:
- Connect stationary devices (e.g., TVs, PCs) directly to the router via Ethernet to free up Wi-Fi bandwidth.
- Set Up a Wired Access Point:
- Use an Ethernet connection for access points in large homes with thick walls and floors.
5. Additional Considerations
- Symptoms of weak Wi-Fi affecting Aquascape devices may also manifest in other connected devices (e.g., poor video/audio quality on smart TVs).
- Experiment with different adjustments to isolate the source of interference and improve overall network performance.
