Mink are skilled swimmers and predators that can enter backyard ponds and attack koi of various sizes. A single mink may kill or injure multiple fish in one visit.
How to Protect Your Koi
- Install a secure pond cover using sturdy, predator-resistant materials that cannot easily be lifted or pushed aside.
- Close gaps and openings around the pond, including areas where mink could enter beneath a cover.
- Secure waterfalls, streams, and filtration areas that may provide access to the pond.
- Remove nearby hiding places, such as dense brush and debris.
- Use a trail camera to help identify predators visiting your pond.
Signs of Mink Activity
Possible signs of mink or other predators include:
- Several koi disappearing or being killed within a short period.
- Fish with bite wounds, particularly around the head or neck.
- Partially eaten fish or fish found outside the pond.
These signs do not necessarily confirm mink activity. A wildlife camera may help identify the predator.
Can Mink Be Trapped or Removed?
Mink trapping and removal are regulated differently depending on your location. Contact your local wildlife authority or a licensed wildlife-control professional for guidance.
Important: Mink can squeeze through surprisingly small openings. Standard lightweight pond netting may not provide adequate protection.
