Snakes may visit backyard ponds looking for frogs, small fish, or young koi. While it may not be possible to keep snakes away completely, you can take steps to reduce the risk to your fish.
- Provide fish hiding places: Add underwater fish caves, rock overhangs, or other protected areas where fish can escape predators.
- Remove potential snake hiding places: Keep grass trimmed and remove excessive vegetation, brush, and debris around the pond.
- Limit access: Close openings beneath decks and nearby structures where snakes may shelter.
- Consider protective barriers: Properly installed wildlife barriers may help discourage snakes from entering the pond area. Avoid loose netting that could trap wildlife.
Important: Never attempt to handle an unidentified snake. Some snakes are venomous or legally protected. Contact a local wildlife professional if removal is necessary.
