Koi may occasionally swim into the pond skimmer because water is continuously being drawn toward the skimmer opening. Fish may also follow floating food or debris into the skimmer.
Fish that enter the skimmer may have more difficulty getting back out if they are weak, stressed, injured, or less active because of cold water.
How can I help prevent this?
- Avoid feeding koi directly in front of the skimmer.
- Check the skimmer regularly for fish.
- Watch for fish that appear weak, lethargic, injured, or are swimming abnormally.
- Make sure the pond has proper circulation and aeration.
Important: If fish are repeatedly entering the skimmer or are found dead, inspect the rest of the pond and fish for other possible issues rather than assuming the skimmer is the only cause.
