For the 2-Outlet Pond Aeration Kit, 4-Outlet Pond Aeration Kit, Pro Air 20, and Pro Air 60, start by identifying whether the air pump will not run or runs with weak or no airflow.
Unplug the air pump before inspecting or servicing it. Never submerge the air pump or compressor in water.
If the air pump will not run
- Check whether the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) has tripped.
- Confirm that the power supply matches the requirements in your model’s instruction manual. Incorrect supply voltage can prevent operation.
For the 2-Outlet and 4-Outlet Pond Aeration Kits, keep the air pump in a dry indoor location protected from weather, airborne dust, and debris. Position it above the pond’s water level to help prevent water from siphoning into the pump.
If the air pump runs but airflow is weak or absent
- Check the check valves. They must allow air to flow from the pump toward the aeration discs or diffusers. Do not remove them to bypass the problem; they help prevent pond water from siphoning into the pump.
- Check the airline tubing. Make sure it is not kinked or restricted.
Continue with the checks for your model below.
Pro Air 20 and Pro Air 60
If a kinked tube or dirty diffuser membrane significantly blocks airflow, shut down the compressor immediately to prevent overheating.
- Inspect the membrane diffuser for restrictions.
- Check the air inlet sponge filter for clogging. Rinse it in clean water and let it dry thoroughly before reinstalling it, or replace it if needed.
- On the Pro Air 20, gently pull off the filter cover to access the sponge filter. On the Pro Air 60, gently pop off the top plastic compressor cover.
- If airflow remains low, worn compressor components may need replacement. Use the model-specific Pro Air 20 Compressor Renew Kit or Pro Air 60 Replacement Diaphragm, following the applicable replacement instructions.
2-Outlet and 4-Outlet Pond Aeration Kits
If airflow remains low after checking the check valves and tubing, the air diaphragm cartridge(s) may be worn and need replacement.
The 2-Outlet model uses one cartridge; the 4-Outlet model uses two. Follow the cartridge-replacement instructions in your model’s manual.
If a Pro Air compressor makes abnormal noises
Check the air inlet sponge filter for clogging. The Pro Air 20 and Pro Air 60 manuals recommend checking this filter annually, whenever abnormal noises occur, and more frequently in dusty conditions.
