New koi and goldfish should be gradually acclimated to pond water before being released. This helps prevent temperature shock, reduces stress, and allows fish to adjust to their new environment.
Before adding new fish
- Check water quality: Ensure ammonia and nitrite levels are safe and the pond has adequate filtration and aeration.
- Inspect the fish: Look for signs of illness, damaged fins, or unusual swimming behavior.
- Quarantine new fish: Use a separate quarantine system when possible to reduce the risk of introducing diseases or parasites.
How to acclimate new fish
- Float the fish container: Allow the container to float in the pond for approximately 10–15 minutes to gradually equalize water temperatures.
- Add pond water slowly: Introduce small amounts of pond water into the container over time to help fish adjust to the new water conditions.
- Release the fish gently: Once acclimated, carefully transfer the fish into the pond.
- Discard transport water: Avoid pouring water from the retailer or transport container directly into the pond.
After adding new fish
- Monitor fish for several days for abnormal swimming, gasping, or unusual behavior.
- Maintain proper filtration and aeration.
- Avoid overfeeding while fish adjust to their new environment.
Important: Never release fish directly into pond water with a significantly different temperature. Sudden temperature changes can cause stress or temperature shock.
