Aquatic plants can be planted in Aquascape Fabric Aquatic Planters or floated on the water's surface, depending on the plant type. Aquascape Fabric Aquatic Planters are recommended for rooted aquatic plants because they help contain roots, allow water to circulate through the planter, and make plant maintenance easier.
How to plant aquatic plants
- Choose a location. Select an area with the appropriate sunlight and water depth for the plant.
- Select a fabric planter. Choose an Aquascape Fabric Aquatic Planter large enough to accommodate the plant's roots and future growth.
- Add planting media. Fill the fabric planter with aquatic plant potting media, leaving enough room for the plant's root system.
- Position the plant. Place the roots into the planting media, keeping the plant's crown at the recommended planting depth.
- Cover with gravel. Add a layer of washed gravel over the planting media to help keep the soil in place.
- Place in the pond. Slowly lower the planter into the pond at the recommended water depth.
Planting requirements by plant type
- Marginal plants: Plant in Aquascape Fabric Aquatic Planters and position along shallow pond shelves at the recommended depth.
- Water lilies: Plant in appropriately sized fabric aquatic planters using aquatic plant potting media. Many varieties grow in 12–24 in. (30–61 cm) of water, depending on the species.
- Floating plants: Place water lettuce and water hyacinth directly on the water's surface. No planter or planting media is required.
- Submerged plants: Plant in fabric aquatic planters and position at the recommended water depth for the species.
Planting tips
- Use aquatic plant potting media instead of regular garden soil.
- Choose a fabric planter that provides adequate space for root development.
- Cover exposed planting media with washed gravel to reduce soil disturbance and cloudy water.
- Use fabric planters to help manage plant growth and simplify repositioning or maintenance.
- Fertilize with products designed for aquatic plants, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Follow each plant's specific sunlight and water-depth requirements.
Properly planted aquatic plants absorb excess nutrients, provide shade, and contribute to a healthy pond ecosystem.
