A partial water change helps maintain healthy pond water by removing accumulated waste and diluting excess nutrients. For routine pond maintenance, replacing 10–20% of the pond water is generally recommended when needed.
How to perform a partial water change
- Turn off the pond pump if necessary. If removing water will expose the pump or cause it to run without sufficient water, turn it off before draining.
- Remove 10–20% of the pond water. Use a clean submersible pump or siphon to drain the water. Avoid disturbing the fish or stirring up debris.
- Treat the replacement water. If using tap water, use Aquascape Pond Detoxifier according to the product label to neutralize harmful chlorine and chloramines.
- Refill the pond slowly. Add fresh water gradually to prevent sudden temperature changes that could stress the fish.
- Restore normal circulation. Return the pond to its proper operating water level and restart the pump if it was turned off.
- Monitor the fish. Observe fish behavior after the water change to make sure they are swimming and behaving normally.
Important precautions
- Avoid replacing large amounts of water unnecessarily, as sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry can stress fish.
- Never add untreated municipal tap water containing chlorine or chloramines directly to a pond with fish.
- Keep the pond pump adequately submerged whenever it is operating.
- Partial water changes should supplement, not replace, regular filtration and pond maintenance.
