Excess sediment, or sludge, accumulates on the pond bottom from decomposing leaves, fish waste, and other organic debris. Removing excessive buildup helps maintain water quality and a healthy pond ecosystem.
How to remove excess sediment
- Remove debris: Use a pond net to remove leaves, twigs, and other large debris.
- Remove sludge: Use a pond vacuum or suitable cleanout pump to remove accumulated sediment without disturbing the fish.
- Clean filtration: Remove debris from the skimmer basket and clean filter pads as needed.
- Add beneficial bacteria: Use Aquascape Beneficial Bacteria or an appropriate sludge-reducing treatment according to the product label.
- Maintain circulation: Keep the pump and filtration system operating properly.
How to prevent sediment buildup
- Remove fallen leaves and dead aquatic plants regularly.
- Avoid overfeeding fish.
- Maintain proper filtration and water circulation.
- Apply beneficial bacteria treatments as directed.
Important: Some organic material is normal in an ecosystem pond. If excessive sludge covers the pond bottom, a complete pond cleanout may be necessary.
