Restart your pond pump, waterfall, and filtration system in early spring once the pond has thawed, ice is no longer blocking water circulation, and the risk of damaging freezing conditions has passed. You do not need to wait until the pond water reaches 50°F (10°C).
What should I check before restarting?
- Remove debris: Clear leaves and accumulated debris from the pond, skimmer, and pump intake.
- Inspect equipment: Check pumps, plumbing, fittings, and electrical cords for damage.
- Clean filtration: Rinse filter mats and biological filter media to remove accumulated debris.
- Reconnect equipment: Reinstall the pump and reconnect plumbing according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Check water levels: Make sure the pump has adequate water before turning it on.
- Restart the system: Turn on the pump and verify that water circulates properly through the waterfall and filtration system.
- Check for leaks: Inspect plumbing connections and monitor the pond water level.
Important: Never operate a submersible pump without adequate water. Running a pump dry can cause permanent damage.
What about other pond equipment?
- Aerators: Continue operating as needed to maintain adequate oxygen levels.
- UV clarifiers and ionizers: Reinstall and restart according to their specific operating instructions after winter storage.
- Pond de-icers: Remove when freezing conditions have ended and they are no longer needed.
If freezing temperatures return, monitor your pond for ice buildup, restricted water flow, and low water levels.
