A Pondless Waterfall pump may run out of water when the water level in the underground reservoir becomes too low. Common causes include evaporation, excessive splashing, and water escaping from the waterfall or stream.
Common causes and solutions
- Evaporation: Hot, dry, or windy weather increases water loss. Check the reservoir regularly and add fresh water as needed.
- Excessive splashing: Water may splash outside the lined waterfall or stream area. Check for water escaping over rocks or along the edges.
- Water leaks: Damaged liner, loose plumbing connections, or water escaping around the waterfall can cause the reservoir to lose water.
- Insufficient reservoir capacity: If the reservoir does not hold enough water for the waterfall's operation, the pump may become exposed as water circulates through the system.
- Ice buildup: During freezing weather, ice dams can redirect water outside the waterfall, causing the reservoir level to drop.
How to troubleshoot a low water level
- Turn off the pump if the water level is too low to keep it submerged.
- Check the reservoir: Open the inspection cap on top of the Pondless Waterfall Vault to inspect the water level.
- Add water: Use a garden hose to refill the reservoir to the proper operating level.
- Inspect the waterfall: Restart the pump and check for excessive splashing or water flowing outside the lined area.
- Monitor the water level: If the reservoir continues losing water rapidly, inspect for leaks or water escaping from the system.
Important: Never allow the pump to operate without sufficient water. Running a pump dry can cause damage.
When to seek additional assistance
Some water loss from evaporation and splashing is normal. However, if the reservoir requires frequent refilling or the pump repeatedly runs out of water, the waterfall may need further inspection.
