Water splashing outside the waterfall liner is usually caused by excessive water flow, improperly positioned rocks, or waterfall edges that are too low to contain the splash. This can cause water loss even when the liner is not damaged.
How to stop water from splashing outside the liner
- Check the waterfall rocks. Look for rocks that cause water to splash sideways or outside the liner. Reposition smaller rocks to direct water back into the waterfall or stream.
- Check the water flow. Excessive water flow can create splashing, especially where water drops onto rocks or shallow areas. If your pump is adjustable, try reducing the flow slightly.
- Inspect the liner edges. Make sure the liner extends above the water level and splash zone. Low or settled edges may allow water to escape. Raise the affected liner edge by carefully adding soil underneath it.
- Remove obstructions. Clear leaves, debris, excessive algae, or overgrown plants that may redirect water toward the waterfall edges.
- Check for wet areas. Inspect the soil, mulch, and gravel surrounding the waterfall. Wet spots can help identify where water is escaping.
How to confirm the problem is fixed
Run the waterfall and observe the water movement around each cascade.
- Make sure splashing water lands within the liner.
- Check that water flows back into the pond or reservoir.
- Monitor the water level for continued excessive water loss.
Important: A small amount of splashing is normal. However, water consistently splashing outside the liner can cause significant water loss over time.
