A Pondless Waterfall reservoir may run out of water due to evaporation, excessive splashing, water escaping over the liner edges, or a leak in the waterfall system. Some water loss is normal, but frequent refilling may indicate a problem.
Common causes of water loss
- Evaporation: Hot temperatures, direct sunlight, wind, and low humidity can increase water loss.
- Excessive splashing: Water may splash outside the lined area of the waterfall or stream, especially around larger drops.
- Low liner edges: Water can escape where the stream or waterfall liner has settled or shifted below the operating water level.
- Water flowing behind rocks: Water may travel behind waterfall rocks and escape outside the liner.
- Plumbing leaks: Loose fittings or damaged plumbing can allow water to escape.
- Liner damage: Holes, punctures, or tears in the liner may cause water loss.
- Winter ice formation: Ice dams can redirect flowing water outside the lined area.
How to troubleshoot a reservoir that runs out of water
- Turn off the pump if the reservoir water level is too low for safe operation.
- Check the water level through the inspection port on the Pondless Waterfall Vault.
- Refill the reservoir with a garden hose to restore the proper operating water level.
- Inspect the waterfall and stream for excessive splashing or water escaping over the edges.
- Check the liner edges for low areas where water may be escaping.
- Inspect accessible plumbing connections for visible leaks.
- Monitor the water level to determine whether water loss continues after correcting any visible problems.
How often should I add water?
Occasional refilling is normal, particularly during hot or windy weather. Evaporation and splashing are the most common causes of routine water loss.
However, if the reservoir requires frequent refilling or runs out of water shortly after being filled, inspect the system for excessive water loss or leaks.
Important: Do not allow the waterfall pump to operate without sufficient water. Running a pump dry can damage the pump.
