Water flowing underneath waterfall rocks instead of over them is usually caused by gaps between the rocks or missing or deteriorated waterfall foam. Water follows the path of least resistance, allowing it to travel beneath the rocks rather than cascade over the waterfall.
How to correct the water flow
- Turn off the waterfall pump. Allow the water to drain away from the waterfall rocks.
- Inspect the rocks. Look for gaps or openings where water can travel underneath or between the stones.
- Check the existing waterfall foam. Look for areas where the foam is missing, damaged, or no longer filling the gaps.
- Apply waterfall foam. Use Aquascape Pond and Waterfall Foam Sealant to fill gaps between the waterfall rocks. The foam helps redirect water over the rocks instead of underneath them.
- Allow the foam to cure. Follow the product instructions before restarting the pump.
- Test the waterfall. Restart the pump and observe the water flow. Make additional adjustments if necessary.
Additional considerations
- Rock positioning: Rocks that have shifted may create openings that allow water to flow underneath them.
- Waterfall design: Properly positioned waterfall rocks help create an even cascade.
- Water loss: Water traveling underneath rocks can reduce the visible waterfall flow. If water is escaping outside the liner, it may also cause water loss.
Important: Waterfall foam is designed to redirect water, not replace the pond liner or repair liner leaks.
