The amount of rock and gravel needed for an Aquascape Pond Kit depends on the pond's length and width. Aquascape recommends using the following calculations to estimate the amount of boulders and gravel needed to cover the pond's bottom and sides.
How to calculate the amount of rock and gravel
Step 1: Calculate the boulders needed
Multiply the pond's length by its width in feet, then divide by 65.
Length (ft) × Width (ft) ÷ 65 = Tons of boulders
Step 2: Calculate the gravel needed
Multiply the estimated boulder weight by 0.30.
Tons of boulders × 0.30 = Tons of gravel
Example: 11 × 16 ft pond
For an 11 × 16 ft (3.35 × 4.88 m) pond:
- Boulders: 11 × 16 ÷ 65 = approximately 2.7 US tons (2,450 kg).
- Gravel: 2.7 × 0.30 = approximately 0.81 US tons (735 kg).
Estimated total: 3.51 US tons (3,185 kg) of rock and gravel.
Important considerations
- These calculations provide an estimate for a typical Aquascape Pond Kit installation.
- The actual amount may vary depending on pond depth, shape, shelves, and boulder sizes.
- Larger or deeper ponds may require additional rock to cover vertical walls and planting shelves.
- Additional rock may be needed to construct waterfalls, streams, or decorative features.
- Confirm the required quantities with your landscape material supplier before installation.
