Preparing your pond for spring involves removing winter debris, cleaning filters, inspecting equipment, restarting circulation, and checking water quality.
Spring pond preparation checklist
- Remove debris. Clear leaves, twigs, and organic debris from the pond and skimmer using an Aquascape Pond Net.
- Check for sludge. Remove excess sediment. A complete pond cleanout may be necessary if significant debris has accumulated.
- Clean filters. Remove debris from filter mats and filtration components while preserving beneficial bacteria.
- Inspect equipment. Check pumps, plumbing, and connections for damage, leaks, or blockages before restarting.
- Restart circulation. Turn on the pump and waterfall. Confirm proper water flow and check for leaks.
- Add beneficial bacteria. Use Cold Water Beneficial Bacteria in cooler water, then transition to Beneficial Bacteria as temperatures rise, following product directions.
- Maintain plants. Remove dead foliage and divide or repot aquatic plants as needed.
- Check water quality and fish. Test pH, ammonia, nitrite, and carbonate hardness (KH). Monitor fish for unusual behavior or signs of stress.
- Resume feeding. When pond water temperatures consistently reach 50°F (10°C), begin feeding small amounts of Premium Cold Water Fish Food.
Does my pond need a complete spring cleanout?
Not every pond needs a complete cleanout. Ponds with clear water and minimal debris may only require routine maintenance. Excessive sludge or accumulated organic debris may indicate that a thorough cleaning is needed.
