Winterizing your decorative fountain helps prevent damage caused by freezing temperatures. The proper winterization procedure depends on the type of fountain.
How to winterize your fountain
- Disconnect the pump: Turn off the fountain pump and disconnect it from the electrical power source.
- Remove debris: Clear leaves and debris from the fountain and surrounding reservoir.
- Protect the fountain: Install an Aquascape custom-fitted fountain cover when available.
- Follow the winterization instructions for your specific fountain type.
Winterization by fountain type
- Decorative urns and spheres: Disconnect the pump and leave the underground reservoir full of water. Install a fountain cover for additional protection.
- Fountain Bowls: Disconnect the pump and completely drain the exposed bowl. Fountain covers are highly recommended to help prevent internal cracking caused by freezing temperatures.
- Spillway Bowls and Basins: Disconnect the pump and completely drain the exposed bowls and basins. Install a properly fitted cover to help prevent internal cracking.
- Natural Basalt Columns: Disconnect the pump. Natural basalt columns can remain outdoors without additional winterization.
Important: Always drain exposed decorative bowls before freezing temperatures arrive. Installing a properly fitted fountain cover provides additional protection against snow, ice, and moisture that could cause internal cracking. Never operate a fountain pump without sufficient water.
Preparing for spring
Once freezing temperatures have passed, remove the fountain cover, inspect the fountain for damage, reconnect the pump, and verify the proper water level before restarting.
