You can leave your pond pump and waterfall running during winter or shut them down. In areas that experience prolonged freezing temperatures, shutting down the waterfall is generally the lower-maintenance option. Keeping the waterfall running is also possible but requires regular monitoring.
Option 1: Shut down the pump and waterfall
Shutting down the waterfall is recommended when freezing temperatures persist for extended periods or when regular monitoring is not possible.
- Turn off and unplug the pond pump.
- Remove the pump and check valve assembly.
- Clean the pump and store it in a frost-free location according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Drain exposed plumbing and filtration components to prevent freezing damage.
- If fish remain in the pond, use an aerator to provide oxygen and help maintain an opening in the ice.
- In regions with prolonged freezing temperatures, use a pond de-icer to help maintain an opening for gas exchange.
Important: Fish need adequate oxygen and gas exchange throughout winter, even when the waterfall is turned off.
Option 2: Keep the pump and waterfall running
A pond waterfall can operate throughout winter, provided the system is monitored and water continues flowing properly.
- Keep the pump running continuously rather than turning it on and off.
- Check for ice dams that could redirect water outside the pond or stream.
- Monitor the pond's water level regularly and add water when necessary.
- Make sure the pump remains adequately submerged and never runs dry.
- Inspect the waterfall more frequently during extended freezing temperatures.
- Consider using a pond de-icer as a backup during extreme cold, even when the waterfall is running.
Important: A running waterfall does not guarantee that the pond surface will remain ice-free. Ice buildup can also redirect water outside the pond, causing significant water loss and possible pump damage.
Which option is best?
- Mild winters: The pond pump and waterfall can generally remain running.
- Extended freezing temperatures: Shutting down the waterfall is usually the lower-maintenance choice.
- Ponds with fish: Maintain oxygenation and an opening in the ice, whether the waterfall is running or shut down.
- Unable to monitor the pond regularly: Shut down and properly winterize the waterfall system.
