Water may overflow from a pond skimmer when the pond water level is too high, the overflow fitting is blocked or improperly adjusted, or the skimmer is installed at the incorrect height. Heavy rainfall or excessive water added to the pond can also cause overflowing.
Common causes and solutions
- Pond water level is too high: Check the water level at the skimmer opening. For Aquascape Signature Series Pond Skimmers, the recommended water level is approximately 3/4 in. (1.9 cm) below the top of the skimmer opening. Remove excess water if necessary.
- Overflow fitting is blocked: If your skimmer has an overflow fitting, check for leaves, dirt, or other debris restricting drainage. Clear any visible obstructions.
- Overflow fitting is improperly adjusted: On skimmers equipped with an adjustable overflow, verify that the overflow is positioned at the correct water level. An overflow set too high may allow water to rise above the intended level.
- Heavy rainfall or excessive water added: Rainfall or an improperly adjusted automatic water fill system can raise the pond water level. Check the fill system and verify that the overflow can drain excess water.
- Skimmer is installed too low or is no longer level: If water continues to overflow despite a properly maintained water level, the skimmer may have been installed incorrectly or shifted after installation. Correcting its position may require a qualified pond contractor.
What if water is coming out of the overflow pipe?
Water draining through the skimmer's overflow pipe when the pond water level rises is normal. The overflow is designed to direct excess water away from the pond and help prevent water from spilling over the pond liner.
If water continuously flows through the overflow during normal operation, check the pond's water level and automatic fill system.
If the problem continues
If the skimmer continues overflowing after checking the water level, overflow fitting, and fill system, additional inspection may be necessary.
