To prevent rocks from puncturing or damaging your pond liner, position rocks carefully and use protective materials beneath large or heavy boulders. Using Aquascape Rock Pad and smooth, rounded gravel helps protect the liner by cushioning sharp edges and distributing weight.
How to protect your pond liner when placing rocks
- Position the flat side of the rock against the liner. Place rocks so their smoothest, flattest surfaces face the liner. Avoid positioning sharp edges or pointed corners directly against it.
- Use Aquascape Rock Pad. Place Aquascape Rock Pad between large or heavy rocks and the pond liner. This extra-thick, non-woven polypropylene material provides a protective cushion that helps prevent punctures, rips, and tears.
- Create a gravel base for large rocks. Place a layer of small, smooth, rounded gravel beneath large boulders. This helps distribute the rock's weight over a larger area, reducing concentrated pressure on the liner.
- Avoid dragging rocks across the liner. Carefully lift and position rocks instead of sliding them across exposed liner, which could cause scratches, tears, or punctures.
- Check rock stability. Make sure rocks are securely positioned and will not shift or roll against the liner.
Additional protection for large boulders
For particularly large or heavy boulders, combining Aquascape Rock Pad with a layer of smooth, rounded gravel provides additional cushioning and helps distribute the rock's weight.
Important: Always position the flattest side of the rock toward the liner, even when protective materials are installed. Avoid placing sharp edges or pointed corners directly against the pond liner.
