These formulas will help you determine the recommended flow rate for a waterfall based on the width of the waterfall in a residential and commercial setting.
***The flow rating is based purely on the width of the spillway of the waterfall and does not include the frame rocks.
Imperial (Feet/Gallons)
Average minimum water flow for a residential waterfall
- 1,500 gallons per hour per foot of waterfall width
Example: The project requires a waterfall that is 2' wide
- 2 X 1500 = 3,000 gallons per hour pump will be required
Average minimum water flow for a commercial waterfall
- 3,000 gallons per hour per foot of waterfall width
Example: The project requires a waterfall that is 4' wide
- 4 X 3000 = 12,000 gallons per hour pump will be required
Metric (Meters/Liters)
Average minimum water flow for a residential waterfall
- 19,000 liters per hour per meter of waterfall width
Example: The project requires a waterfall that is 30 cm wide
- 0.30 X 19,000 = 5,700 liters per hour pump will be required
Average minimum water flow for a commercial waterfall
- 38,000 liters per hour per meter of waterfall width
Example: The project requires a waterfall that is 1.2 m wide
- 1.2 X 38,000 = 45,600 liters per hour pump will be required
