For optimal performance, the Aquascape IonGen System requires a total alkalinity level between 100–250 ppm (100–250 mg/L).
Alkalinity affects how effectively the IonGen System controls string algae.
Important: Do not operate the IonGen System in a pond containing fish if total alkalinity is below 100 ppm.
How to check and adjust alkalinity
Use a KH/alkalinity test kit to measure your pond's total alkalinity.
- Below 100 ppm: Increase the alkalinity before operating IonGen in a pond containing fish. The IonGen manual identifies baking soda as one method of raising alkalinity. Make adjustments gradually over several days.
- Above 250 ppm: A partial water change can help reduce alkalinity. Check the alkalinity of your replacement water before adding it to the pond.
- Between 100–250 ppm: Maintain this range for optimal IonGen performance.
Water chemistry can change throughout the season, especially in ponds that experience significant evaporation. Test periodically to maintain the recommended conditions.
Note: Continue monitoring copper levels separately. Copper concentration must remain below 0.25 ppm (0.25 mg/L).
