The Aquascape IonGen System has three configurations: Generation 1 (G1), Generation 1.5 (G1.5), and Generation 2 (G2).
The generations can be identified by examining the control panel, the connection between the probe and controller, and the type of flow chamber.
Generation 1 (G1) — Original IonGen System
The G1 uses the original green control panel and first-generation probe connection.
Control panel appearance:
- Color: Bright green face with a black outer housing.
- Shape: Rectangular housing with mounting tabs on the sides.
- Display: Vertical LED indicator displaying the ionization level.
- Indicator lights: Includes a prominent blue indicator light near the upper-right corner.
- Controls: Original first-generation ionization adjustment controls.
- Digital display: Does not have the blue numerical display found on the newer controllers.
Probe connection:
- The probe wire extends from the control panel.
- The end of the wire has an electrical connector that snaps directly onto the top of the IonGen probe.
- The wire is not permanently attached to the probe.
- The probe is installed in the original white PVC tee-style flow chamber.
Identification: A green control panel with a vertical LED display and a wire connector that snaps directly onto the probe identifies the G1 configuration.
Generation 1.5 (G1.5) — Transitional IonGen System
The G1.5 combines the newer G2-style controller with the original G1-style probe mounting arrangement.
Control panel appearance:
- Color: Gray and black housing.
- Shape: Rounded rectangular design.
- Display: Blue numerical digital display in the center.
- Indicator lights: Status lights positioned above the numerical display.
- Controls: Touch-sensitive minus (–) and plus (+) controls near the bottom of the panel.
- Electrical connections: Cables extend from the bottom of the controller.
Probe connection:
- Like the G1, the G1.5 has a wire with an electrical connector that snaps directly onto the top of the probe.
- The wire is not permanently attached to the probe.
- The G1.5 probe is designed to work with the newer controller while retaining the original PVC tee-style flow chamber.
- The probe is installed in the original white PVC tee-style flow chamber.
Identification: A gray and black digital control panel combined with a snap-on electrical connection directly at the probe identifies the G1.5 configuration.
Generation 2 (G2) — Redesigned IonGen System
The G2 uses the newer digital control panel and redesigned probe with an attached cable.
Control panel appearance:
- Color: Gray and black housing.
- Shape: Rounded rectangular design.
- Display: Blue numerical digital display.
- Indicator lights: Status lights above the display.
- Controls: Touch-sensitive minus (–) and plus (+) controls near the bottom.
- Electrical connections: Cables extend from the bottom of the controller.
Probe connection:
- The G2 probe has an electrical wire permanently attached to the probe assembly.
- The opposite end of this wire has a quick-connect electrical plug.
- The quick-connect plug connects to the corresponding wiring from the controller.
- Unlike G1 and G1.5, the G2 does not use an electrical connector that snaps directly onto the top of the probe.
- The G2 probe is designed for the redesigned black flow chamber or compatible G2 probe holder.
Identification: A gray and black digital control panel combined with a probe that has its own attached wire and quick-connect plug identifies the G2 configuration.
Quick identification guide
Use the following steps to determine which generation of IonGen you have.
-
Look at the control panel.
- Green panel with vertical LED indicator: G1.
- Gray and black panel with blue numerical display: G1.5 or G2.
-
Look at the probe's electrical connection.
- Electrical connector snaps directly onto the top of the probe: G1 or G1.5.
- Probe has a permanently attached cable with a quick-connect plug at the opposite end: G2.
-
Check the flow chamber.
- Original white PVC tee-style chamber: G1 or G1.5.
- Redesigned black flow chamber: G2.
Important: The probe's electrical connection is a useful distinguishing feature. G1 and G1.5 use snap-on connections directly at the probe, while G2 uses a cable attached to the probe with a quick-connect plug at the other end.
What if I cannot identify my IonGen generation?
If the control panel, probe, or flow chamber has previously been replaced, the installed components may not match the original system configuration.
If you need additional assistance identifying your IonGen, submit a request through the Aquascape Customer Care contact form.
Include photographs of the control panel, probe, probe electrical connection, and flow chamber.
