The filter mats in your Aquascape BioFalls Filter should be cleaned only once a year, preferably during your annual pond cleanout.
BioFalls filter mats support beneficial bacteria that help break down fish waste and organic material. Cleaning the mats too frequently can remove these bacteria and reduce biological filtration.
Important cleaning guidelines
Clean annually: BioFalls filter mats generally require cleaning only once per year when used with a properly functioning skimmer or prefilter.
Avoid overcleaning: Do not clean the mats more than once a year under normal operating conditions.
Avoid chlorinated tap water: Chlorine can harm or kill the beneficial bacteria living on the filter mats.
Check water flow: If waterfall flow decreases, inspect the pump, skimmer, and prefilter for debris before cleaning the BioFalls mats.
Replace damaged mats: Replace filter mats when they begin to tear, deteriorate, or fall apart.
Important: BioFalls filters are designed primarily for biological filtration. Frequent cleaning is unnecessary and may reduce the filter's ability to maintain healthy pond water.
