A pond skimmer removes floating leaves and debris before they sink to the bottom. If your Signature Series 200, 400, or 1000 Pond Skimmer is not collecting debris effectively, check the water level, debris net or basket, skimmer entrance, and overall pond circulation.
Check the pond water level
The pond water level should be approximately ¾ in. (19 mm) below the top of the skimmer opening for proper surface skimming.
For the Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer, measure from the top of the adjustable exterior liner plate opening.
If the water level is too low, the skimmer may not draw in debris effectively, and the pump may operate with insufficient water.
Empty the debris net or basket
Accumulated leaves, twigs, and other debris can restrict water flow through the skimmer.
- Signature Series 200 Pond Skimmer: Remove and empty the debris net.
- Signature Series 400 Pond Skimmer: Remove and empty the debris basket.
- Signature Series 1000 Pond Skimmer: Remove and empty the debris basket.
Check the net or basket regularly and empty it before it becomes too full. More frequent cleaning may be necessary during spring and fall.
Inspect the filter media
For the Signature Series 400 and 1000, remove and rinse the filter mat beneath the debris basket when excessive debris accumulates or waterfall flow decreases.
For the Signature Series 200, inspect and clean the optional Filter Brush Cartridge (Item #99772), if installed.
Check the skimmer entrance
Make sure rocks, plants, or other obstructions are not preventing water and floating debris from entering the skimmer.
For the Signature Series 400 and 1000, confirm that the weir door is open after maintenance. A closed weir door can restrict water entering the skimmer and cause low-water conditions around the pump.
Improve circulation and eliminate dead spots
Poor pond circulation can create dead spots, which are areas where water movement is minimal. Leaves, sediment, and other debris may settle and remain on the pond bottom instead of moving toward the skimmer.
To improve circulation:
- Identify areas where debris frequently accumulates or water movement is limited.
- Remove accumulated debris from these areas.
- Consider installing the Aquascape Flexible Pond Jet Kit to improve circulation and help direct suspended debris toward the filtration system.
- For additional circulation without installing plumbing, consider the Aquascape Pond Powerhead (Item #91142).
- Position circulation equipment to promote water movement throughout the pond and help floating debris reach the skimmer.
Improving circulation helps reduce stagnant areas and limits debris accumulation. Sediment that has already settled on the bottom may still require manual removal.
Evaluate skimmer placement
Whenever possible, the skimmer should be positioned directly across from the waterfall to promote circulation throughout the pond.
For ponds without a waterfall, prevailing winds can help push floating debris toward a skimmer positioned along the pond's longest axis.
Proper skimmer placement, regular maintenance, and adequate circulation help keep floating debris moving toward the skimmer and reduce accumulation throughout the pond.
