The Aquascape UltraKlean Pond Filter is a pressurized filtration system that combines mechanical filtration, biological filtration, and ultraviolet (UV) clarification to help maintain clean, clear pond water.
A submersible pond pump pushes water through the UltraKlean Pond Filter, which is installed outside the pond, before returning the filtered water to the pond.
How does the filtration system work?
The UltraKlean Pond Filter uses three filtration processes:
- Mechanical filtration: UltraKlean BioBalls trap dirt and debris as water passes through the filter.
- Biological filtration: Beneficial bacteria growing on the BioBalls help break down fish waste and other organic waste.
- UV clarification: Water passes around a UV lamp that helps control suspended, single-celled algae responsible for green pond water.
The filtered water then returns to the pond.
What should I know before using the UltraKlean Pond Filter?
- Filter placement: Install the filter outside the pond on level ground in a location accessible for maintenance. The filter is weatherproof but must not be submerged.
- Fittings and gaskets: Install the supplied flat rubber gaskets in all plumbing fittings to prevent leaks. Hand-tighten fittings without tools.
- Hose adapters: Trim off unused smaller sections of the multi-hose adapters when using larger tubing to avoid restricting water flow.
- Initial setup: Remove the UltraKlean BioBalls from their packaging and fill the filter canister approximately halfway with water before installing the lid. Make sure the O-ring is clean, properly seated, and all lid clips are securely fastened.
- UV bulb handling: Never touch the UV bulb with bare hands. Skin oils can reduce its performance. Always disconnect electrical power before servicing the filter or UV bulb.
- Electrical safety: Connect the filter and pump to properly grounded, GFCI-protected electrical outlets.
- Backwash connection: Keep the backwash discharge valve closed during normal operation. If the discharge valve is not installed, secure the supplied backwash cap when the filter is not being cleaned.
Important: Never bypass the internal UV safety switch. Direct exposure to UV light can damage your eyes and skin.
For detailed installation instructions, see the UltraKlean Pond Filter installation and maintenance manual.
How often does the UltraKlean Pond Filter need maintenance?
The UltraKlean Pond Filter includes a backwash feature that allows cleaning without opening the canister.
A cleaning indicator illuminates approximately every two weeks. Backwash the filter when indicated or sooner if water flow decreases.
Biological filtration may take 3–6 weeks to become fully established. The pond pump should run continuously, 24 hours a day, to maintain biological filtration.
The UV clarifier has adjustable 6-, 12-, and 24-hour operating settings. The 24-hour setting is recommended when treating green pond water. Once the water clears, the UV operating time can be reduced.
Winter care: In climates where freezing occurs, shut down, completely drain, and store the UltraKlean Pond Filter in a frost-free location.
