Backwashing an Aquascape UltraKlean 2000 or UltraKlean 3500 Pond Filter removes accumulated debris from the UltraKlean BioBalls without opening the filter canister.
The process typically takes only a few minutes.
When should I backwash the filter?
- Approximately every two weeks, when the CLEAN indicator illuminates.
- More frequently if water flow becomes reduced.
- Whenever accumulated debris makes additional cleaning necessary.
Backwashing instructions
- Turn off the pond pump. Unplug or disconnect power before changing the valve position.
- Prepare the discharge. Fully open the discharge shutoff valve. If not using the shutoff valve, remove the backwash cap and attach a hose to direct the discharged water to an appropriate area.
- Set the filter to CLEAN. Rotate the selector valve 90° counterclockwise from RUN to CLEAN.
- Restart the pump. Allow the filter to backwash for approximately 1–3 minutes, or until the discharge water begins to run clear.
- Turn off the pump again.
- Close the discharge. Fully close the discharge shutoff valve. If using a temporary discharge hose, remove the fitting and reinstall the backwash cap.
- Return the valve to RUN. Rotate the selector valve 90° clockwise.
- Restart the pond pump.
- Reset the cleaning reminder. Press the RESET CLEAN button on the filter control panel.
Important operating reminders
- Do not change between RUN and CLEAN while the pump is operating.
- Never restrict the filter discharge.
- Make sure the backwash discharge is closed before returning to normal filtration.
- The filter does not need to be opened for routine backwashing.
