The UltraKlean 2000 and 3500 Pond Filters use specially designed UltraKlean BioBalls for mechanical and biological filtration. The BioBalls are cleaned through the filter's backwashing process, so you do not need to open the filter to clean the media.
Backwash your UltraKlean Pond Filter when the CLEAN indicator illuminates, approximately every two weeks, or sooner if water flow decreases.
How to backwash your UltraKlean Pond Filter
- Turn off or unplug the pond pump before beginning.

Prepare the backwash outlet:
- If using the discharge shutoff valve, fully open it.
- If using the backwash cap, remove it and attach the appropriate hose adapter and tubing to direct wastewater away from the filter.
- Turn the backwash selector valve 90° counterclockwise to CLEAN.
- Restore power to the pump and allow the filter to backwash for approximately 1–3 minutes, or until the discharged water begins to run clear.
- Turn off or unplug the pump again.

Close the backwash outlet:
- If using the discharge shutoff valve, fully close it.
- If using the backwash cap, remove the hose adapter and reinstall the cap.
- Turn the backwash selector valve 90° clockwise to RUN.
- Restore power to the pump and press RESET CLEAN to reset the cleaning reminder.
Important: Do not use tools to force the backwash selector valve if it is difficult to turn, as this may damage the handle.
Can I use different filter media?
No. The UltraKlean Pond Filter is designed to use genuine Aquascape UltraKlean BioBalls (Item #95055).
Do not substitute larger BioBalls, standard BioFalls BioBalls, filter pads, foam, gravel, or other filter media. These materials may reduce filtration efficiency or interfere with the backwashing process.
Can I add more UltraKlean BioBalls?
Yes. Additional UltraKlean BioBalls may be added to increase biological filtration:
- UltraKlean 2000: Up to one additional box (250 BioBalls).
- UltraKlean 3500: Up to two additional boxes (500 BioBalls).
Use only genuine UltraKlean BioBalls designed for these filters.
