If your Aquascape UltraKlear UV Clarifier is not clearing green pond water, the most common causes include insufficient treatment time, an aging UV bulb, a dirty quartz sleeve, or improper water flow.
The UltraKlear UV Clarifier is designed to eliminate single-celled algae that cause green water.
1. Allow enough treatment time
- Most ponds begin clearing within approximately 1 week of continuous UV treatment.
- Severe algae blooms may require 2–3 weeks to clear.
- Keep the UV clarifier operating continuously during treatment.
2. Check the UV bulb
- The UltraKlear UV bulb should be replaced after 12 months of continuous operation.
- A UV bulb may still produce visible light even after losing its effectiveness.
- Check that the UV indicator light on the ballast is illuminated.
- If the indicator is off, check the electrical supply and confirm the ballast is properly connected.
Important: Never look directly at an exposed UV bulb or bypass the UV safety switch. UV exposure can damage your eyes and skin.
3. Inspect and clean the quartz sleeve
A dirty quartz sleeve can block UV light from reaching the water, reducing clarification effectiveness.
- Disconnect electrical power to both the pump and UltraKlear UV Clarifier.
- Remove the ballast and quartz sleeve according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Inspect the quartz sleeve for algae, debris, or mineral deposits.
- Clean the sleeve using white vinegar or a non-abrasive calcium, lime, or rust remover with a soft sponge or brush.
- Make sure the quartz sleeve and UV bulb are clean and dry before reassembly.
Important: Handle the quartz sleeve carefully because it is fragile.
4. Verify proper water flow
Excessive water flow can reduce UV treatment effectiveness by decreasing exposure time.
The maximum recommended flow rates are:
- UltraKlear 1000: 500 GPH (1,893 LPH)
- UltraKlear 2500: 1,000 GPH (3,785 LPH)
- UltraKlear 5000: 1,500 GPH (5,678 LPH)
Also check the following:
- Ensure the pump is circulating water through the UV clarifier.
- Inspect the pump and plumbing for clogs or restrictions.
- Check the internal corkscrew sleeve for debris buildup.
- Verify that water flow does not exceed the maximum rating for your UltraKlear model.
What if the pond water is still green?
If the pond remains green after 2–3 weeks, verify that:
- The UV indicator is illuminated.
- The UV bulb has not exceeded its recommended service life.
- The quartz sleeve is clean.
- Water flow is within the clarifier's recommended limits.
