If the UV light on your Aquascape UltraKlear UV Clarifier is not turning on, the most common causes are a loose ballast connection, interrupted electrical power, a loose UV bulb connection, or a failed UV bulb.
Follow these troubleshooting steps to identify the problem.
How to troubleshoot an UltraKlear UV light that will not turn on
- Check the power supply.
- Make sure the UltraKlear UV Clarifier is plugged into a working, properly grounded GFCI-protected outlet.
- Check whether the GFCI outlet or breaker has tripped.
- Restore power if necessary.
- Check the ballast connection.
- Unplug the UltraKlear UV Clarifier before handling the ballast.
- Make sure the ballast is correctly positioned and securely locked into the UV housing.
- The UltraKlear has a built-in safety cutoff switch that prevents the UV bulb from operating when the ballast is not properly installed.
- Inspect the UV bulb connection.
- Unplug both the pump and UltraKlear UV Clarifier before opening the unit.
- Remove the ballast assembly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Check that the UV bulb is securely seated in the ballast's four-pronged socket.
- Reassemble the unit completely before restoring power.
- Check the UV bulb.
- If the connections are secure and the UV bulb still does not illuminate, the bulb may have failed or reached the end of its service life.
- Replace the UV bulb with the correct replacement for your UltraKlear model.
- Aquascape recommends replacing the UV bulb after 12 months of continuous operation to maintain effective water clarification.
How do I know if the UV light is working?
The UltraKlear UV Clarifier has a small indicator light on the ballast near the power cord.
- Indicator illuminated: The UV light is operating.
- Indicator not illuminated: Check the power supply, ballast connection, and UV bulb.
Important safety information: Never look directly at an exposed operating UV bulb or bypass the internal safety switches. Direct exposure to UV radiation can damage your eyes and skin. Always disconnect electrical power before opening or servicing the UltraKlear UV Clarifier.
