The quartz sleeve in an Aquascape UltraKlear UV Clarifier should be cleaned when dirt, algae, or mineral deposits accumulate on its surface. A dirty quartz sleeve reduces the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light reaching the water, making the clarifier less effective at controlling green pond water.
How to clean the quartz sleeve
Disconnect the power. Unplug both the UltraKlear UV Clarifier and the pond pump before performing maintenance.
Release the locking tab. Move the latch tab approximately ¼ in. (6 mm) toward the ballast.
Remove the ballast assembly. Rotate the ballast counterclockwise approximately ½ in. (13 mm) to unlock it. Carefully slide the ballast and attached quartz sleeve out of the housing.
Clean the quartz sleeve. Remove dirt and mineral deposits using white vinegar or a non-abrasive calcium, lime, or rust remover. Gently clean the surface with a soft-bristled brush or sponge.
Inspect and dry the sleeve. Remove any remaining cleaning residue and check for cracks or damage. Make sure there is no moisture inside the quartz sleeve or on the UV bulb before reassembly.
Reinstall the assembly. Carefully slide the quartz sleeve into the UltraKlear housing, aligning the ballast flange with the matching opening.
Secure the ballast. Rotate the ballast clockwise into the locked position and push the latch tab back into place.
Restore operation. Reconnect the pump and UV clarifier to power and check for proper operation and leaks.
Important cleaning precautions
Never service the UltraKlear UV Clarifier while it is connected to electrical power.
Do not use abrasive brushes, scouring pads, or cleaning products that could scratch the quartz sleeve.
Handle the quartz sleeve carefully because the glass can break.
Do not touch the UV bulb with bare hands. Skin oils can reduce bulb performance and lifespan.
Never operate the UV bulb outside its protective housing.
When should the quartz sleeve be cleaned?
Inspect and clean the quartz sleeve whenever mineral deposits or debris are visible, or when the UltraKlear UV Clarifier becomes less effective at clearing green pond water.
Cleaning frequency depends on pond water conditions and mineral content.
Note: Cleaning the quartz sleeve does not restore an aging UV bulb. Aquascape recommends replacing the UV bulb after 12 months of continuous operation for effective clarification.
