An Aquascape skimmer can move, tilt, or rise when the soil around it becomes unstable or water pressure develops beneath or around the pond.
Common causes include:
- Poorly compacted soil: The skimmer can shift if the soil beneath or around it settles.
- Saturated ground: Heavy rain, poor drainage, or groundwater can soften the surrounding soil.
- Hydrostatic pressure: Water trapped beneath the liner can create upward pressure and move the skimmer.
- Overflow problems: Pond water flowing behind the liner can saturate the soil around the skimmer.
- Leaks or washout: A plumbing or skimmer connection leak can wash away supporting soil.
Do not simply push the skimmer back into place. Check for leaks, drainage problems, saturated soil, and proper pond overflow operation first.
If the skimmer has moved significantly, it should be excavated and reset on a firm, compacted, level base. Inspect the liner connection and plumbing for damage before reinstalling it.
