The Aquascape IonGen System helps control string algae, but existing algae, improper settings, a dirty or worn probe, insufficient water circulation, or poor water chemistry can reduce its effectiveness. Follow these steps to improve performance.
1. Remove existing string algae
Manually remove as much string algae and accumulated debris as possible. The IonGen System helps control algae growth but does not immediately eliminate existing algae.
Noticeable results may take several days to a few weeks.
2. Check the ionization setting
- Make sure the IonGen System is powered on.
- Press and hold the + or – button for 3 seconds to enter adjustment mode.
- For new ponds or ponds with little algae, start at level 1 or 2.
- If string algae is excessive, increase the ionization setting as needed while regularly monitoring copper concentrations.
Some water conditions may prevent the controller from reaching higher settings, such as levels 7–10. This does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.
Important: Do not allow copper concentrations to exceed 0.25 ppm (mg/L). If copper reaches 0.25 ppm, reduce the ionization setting to level 1 or disconnect the system until copper falls below 0.25 ppm.
3. Inspect and clean the IonGen Probe
Scale buildup, debris, or worn probe bars can reduce the IonGen System's effectiveness.
- Disconnect power to the IonGen System.
- Remove the IonGen Probe and inspect the metal bars.
- Gently brush or scrape away scale and debris.
- Replace the probe if the bars are significantly worn.
- Reinstall the probe and restore power.
The IonGen Probe typically lasts one or more seasons, depending on usage and water conditions.
If the controller displays "00": The probe may be exhausted, or there may be a system fault. Inspect the probe and check the cable connections for damage.
4. Check water circulation
The IonGen Probe must remain fully submerged with sufficient water flowing across its bars.
- Make sure the probe is submerged and exposed to moving water.
- Check for restricted flow through the IonGen flow chamber.
- If scale repeatedly builds up on the probe, consider moving it to an area with greater water circulation.
For best performance, install the flow chamber directly into the pond's recirculating plumbing system.
5. Test the pond water
Water chemistry significantly affects IonGen System performance.
Recommended water parameters:
- Total alkalinity (KH): 100–250 ppm (mg/L).
- Copper concentration: Below 0.25 ppm (mg/L).
If alkalinity is below 100 ppm, gradually increase it to the recommended range. If alkalinity is above 250 ppm, a partial water change may help reduce it. Test the replacement water before adding it.
Important: Do not operate the IonGen System in ponds containing fish when alkalinity is below 100 ppm.
Low or undetectable copper readings do not always indicate a malfunction because copper ions may be used within the water feature.
If string algae continues to grow
