If your IonGen is not producing ions, it is usually due to a setup issue, lack of proper operating conditions, or a worn component.
- Start by checking the basics:
- Make sure the unit has power and is properly plugged in
- Confirm the control panel is on and displaying a setting
- Inspect the probe:
- Look for wear or depletion of the probe bars
- If the display reads “00,” the probe is likely exhausted and needs replacement
- Check for scale buildup or debris, which can block ion production
- Clean the probe by brushing or scraping off any buildup
- Verify water flow:
- The probe must be in an area with consistent, strong water movement
- Low flow can:
- Prevent ion production
- Cause scale buildup
- If needed, move the probe to a higher flow location or install it in-line
- Review water chemistry:
- Alkalinity should be within 100–250 ppm (mg/L)
- Extremely low or high alkalinity can prevent proper ionization
- Low conductivity water can also limit ion production
- Check installation:
- Ensure the probe is fully submerged at all times
- Make sure it is not installed in stagnant or low-flow areas
- Verify all connections are secure and properly assembled
- Consider operating conditions:
- If the unit is set too low, ion production may be minimal
- Increase the level gradually if needed and monitor results
- If all of the above checks are correct:
- The issue may be a faulty probe or control panel
- Replacing the probe is the most common solution
In most cases, the problem is related to low flow, buildup on the probe, or normal probe wear, all of which are easy to correct once identified.
