If string algae continues growing after using the Aquascape IonGen System, several factors may be affecting its performance. Depending on existing algae growth and water conditions, noticeable results may take several days to a few weeks.
What to check
- Ionization setting: If string algae remains excessive, gradually increase the IonGen setting while monitoring copper levels. Keep copper concentrations below 0.25 ppm (0.25 mg/L).
- Water flow: Make sure sufficient water flows across the IonGen Probe. If necessary, relocate the probe to an area with greater water circulation.
- Probe condition: Inspect the IonGen Probe for scale buildup, debris, or excessive wear. Clean scale and debris from the probe bars and replace the probe if worn.
- Water chemistry: Check that total alkalinity is between 100–250 ppm (100–250 mg/L). Do not operate IonGen in ponds containing fish if alkalinity is below 100 ppm.
- Type of algae: IonGen is designed primarily to control string algae. Other types of algae may not respond as effectively.
Important: A low or zero copper test reading does not necessarily mean the IonGen System is malfunctioning. Monitor string algae growth to evaluate performance rather than continually increasing the ionization setting to obtain a measurable copper reading.
